Thunder Pride...

NSA Crowne Plaza Invitational

June 6-7, 2009

Playing in the Williamsburg tournament, right out of the gate, Thunder Blue faced one of the best teams in the state — the Virginia Legends Blue.  The combination of a couple of Thunder miscues and the Thunder bats not coming alive led to a 3-0 opening game loss.

The Thunder came back in the 1st pool play game with a 4-2 win over the Shockers from Maryland.  A Lindsey N double scored Traci S for the game’s first run in the 3rd inning.  A lead-off triple by Courtney D and hits by Shannon A, Shawna K, and Lindsay W contributed to a 3 run 4th inning to put the Thunder on top 4-0.  The Blue gave up 2 in the 5th and held on for the 4-2 win.  In the other pool play game, pitcher Shannon A allowed only 1 hit and no runs for the 6-0 shut-out win over an always strong Yorktown Revolution squad.  The win was a total team effort as 7 players contributed hits and the defense was strong.  On Sunday, in the quarterfinals, after tying the game at 2 in the 3rd inning, the Back River Surge came back with 2 more in the 4th and added an insurance run in the 6th to get the 5-2 win.

The 2 teams the Thunder lost to in the tournament (Legends & Surge) went on to the Championship game with the Legends coming out on top.  For the year, the Thunder record stands at 8-2 as they prepare for the NSA State tournament in 2 weeks in Richmond...
