USSSA Memorial Day Classic May 23-24, 2009 |
|
In their 1st tournament of the 2009 season, Thunder Blue took care of business – winning 3 pool play games on Saturday and then returning Sunday to capture 3 more wins and the Championship trophy. On Saturday, the team faced back-to-back teams with very strong starting pitchers. In both games, the Thunder went scoreless in the 1st 3 innings. In the first game, the Thunder broke the scoreless tie with 4 runs in the 4th inning and tacked on 3 more in the 7th to win 7-0 against the Stingers. In the 2nd game, the Thunder bats woke up in the 4th inning, putting up 5 runs in the 5th on route to a 10-0 win over the River City Riot. In the final game of pool play, the Thunder again went scoreless through 3 innings before tying the game at 1 in the 4th inning. After scoring 2 each in the top of the 5th and 6th innings, the Thunder led 5-1. A River City rally in the bottom of the final inning came up short as the Blue held on for the 5-3 win. On Sunday, in the quarterfinals, the Thunder scored 4 runs in the 1st and cruised to a 6-0 win over the Richmond Rundown. The semi-finals was a rematch with Stingers – this time around the Thunder , after going scoreless in the bottom of the 1st, busted out with 6 runs in the 2nd, eventually earning a trip to the finals with a 9-4 win. In the Championship game, the Thunder continued to roll, scoring 2 in the 1st, 3 in the 3rd, and 5 more in the 5th to end the game, 10-0. In the tournament, the Thunder outscored their opponents 47 to 7, giving up 0 earned runs. Congratulations to the girls for their hard work (at practice and school ball) over recent weeks that helped prepare them for success!
