HANOVER COUNTY — After losing only 2 games in the regular season, the adult coed Thunder team took the field in the top bracket of the post-season playoffs. On a blustery Friday night the Thunder opened play against the Aftershock. Trying to hold on to a 7-6 lead after 3 innings, the Thunder gave up 2 in the 4th to go down 8-7. Things got worse as the Thunder fell behind the Aftershock 13-8 after though the top of the 6th. In the bottom of the 6th, the Thunder cut the lead to 13-11 on the power of J.B. and Barry S blasts...after shutting down the Aftershock in the top of the 7th, the Thunder went to work — a rally with contributions from Dave P, Courtney, J.B. and Barry S — ended with a game winning RBI from Brittany S...the 14-13 win set-up a match-up with the undefeated Real Deal — the team that swept the Thunder in the regular season... In a battle for the right to get into the Championship bracket of the double-elimination tournament, both teams were up for the challenge. The Thunder trailed 7-6 going into the top of the what would be the final inning. The Real Deal tacked on 2 more runs to take a 3 run cushion into the bottom of the inning — that’s when the THUNDER ROLLED!! After a lead-off out—Barry S started a string of 10 straight batters to reach base — time expired with the Thunder up 16-9 — with 10 runs coming in the final frame! The win put the Thunder in the Championship game Monday night — in position to have to get beat twice to get knocked out…

As expected the Real Deal won their next game to set-up a re-match of the top 2 teams in the County. There would be no blow-out in this game. The Thunder took advantage of the home-run power of Barry S, J.B., and Mark B and the outstanding field play of Brittany, Candis, and Reuben A to keep things close...things could have been worse for the Thunder if not for the defensive play of the year by John J — with the Real Deal threatening mid-way through the game, with 2 outs and the bases loaded, a deep fly ball was blasted to left-center field where John J hustled to back-up the left-center fielder — as the fielder went back to attempt to catch the ball, it tipped off her glove — but John J was there to save the day as he caught the ball off his shoestrings for the final out of the inning… Heading into the final frame (7th), the Thunder, trailing by 1-run (13 to 12), were down to there last 3 outs — with 1-out and Diane L and Courtney on base, power-hitter J.B. blasted a rocket-shot over the right-field fence to put the Thunder up 15 to 13 — with 2 outs, Barry S ripped a shot to the fence ending up on 3rd base, “Red” was able to get Barry home to allow the Thunder to take a 3 run lead into the bottom of the inning — after a lead-off hit, the Real Deal went down quietly with a pop-out and 2 ground-outs to pitcher — after finishing as co-Champs last year in their 1st year in the league, the Thunder got over the top to take the Championship in 2009!! |
