PA-Softball Summer Sizzler

July 18-19, 2009

Here’s what happened against some of the top teams on the East Coast in the Summer Sizzler:

 

Pool Play

 

Game 1:  Thunder 3, Harford Xtreme (MD) 6 (6 innings)

Thunder scored 2 in the bottom of the 1st to take the lead — after the Xtreme tied it at 2 in the top of the 3rd, the Thunder again took the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the inning.  Helped by a couple of Thunder miscues, the Xtreme was able to take the lead and eventually the game 6-3.  Taylor S and Shannon A both had 2 hits in the game.  MVP Medal went to Shannon A.

 

Game 2:  Thunder 4, Delaware Diamonds 2 (6 innings)

Again scoring early, the Thunder plated 3 runs in the top of the 1st on hits by Courtney D, Ashley B, and Lindsay W.  The Thunder scored again in the top of the 6th before the Diamonds got on the scoreboard with 2 in the bottom of 6th before time ran out resulting in  a Thunder 4-2 win.  Kelsie B allowed no earned runs and gave up no walks to earn the win.  Lindsay W had 2 hits and 2 RBI for the Thunder.  MVP Medal to Kelsie B.

 

Game 3:  Thunder 8, ETC Elite (PA) 0 (6 innings)

The Thunder waited until the 4th inning to score, but proceeded to put up 2 in the inning, followed by 1 in the 5th and another 5 in the 6th.  Shannon A got the win, allowing 0 runs in the shutout — she also struck out 8.  Ashley B led the Thunder sticks with 3 hits in 3 at-bats along with Courtney D who went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs (double & triple).  The Thunder had 10 hits in the game.  MVP Medal to Courtney D.

Gold Bracket 1st Round...

Game 4:  Thunder 5, Maryland Express 4 (7 innings)

Taylor S led the game off with a triple blast and scored the 1st run of the game.  The Express tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning.  Taking advantage of some Express fielding mistakes the Thunder capitalized to put up 3 runs in the top of the 3rd to take a 4-1 lead.  Another run in the 5th put the lead at 5-1.  In the bottom of the 7th, the Express came alive scoring 3 runs with another 2 runners in scoring position before a ground ball out ended the game with the Thunder up 5-4.  Courtney D had 2 hits in the game and Shannon A scored 2 of the Thunder 5 runs.  Kelsie B gave up only 3 hits and struck out 8 for the win.  MVP Medal to Lindsay W for an important 2-RBI single in the 5th and solid play in the field.

 

Gold Bracket Quarterfinals...

Game 5:  Thunder 2, Maryland Magic Orange 7 (6 innings)

The solid hitting Magic Orange team was able to put up 2 runs in each of the 1st 3 innings staking to a 6-1 lead.  Each team scored 1 more run for the final 7-2 score.  The Thunder had base runners on in 5 of the 6 innings, but could only push 2 across the plate.  Kelsie B (double) and Megan I (Home Run) had extra-base hits for the Thunder.  Megan I, in the final inning, connected on a tremendous Home Run blast to earn the MVP Medal.

Road Trip for Thunder Blue ...

Thunder Blue traveled up North to play in one of the premier tournaments on the East Coast over the July 18-19 weekend.  In a tournament field of 22 teams, including teams from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New York,  Thunder advanced to the Final 8 before losing to eventual tournament runner-up Maryland Magic Orange.  See “Road Trip” for more...
