2005 Recap

Thunder Finishes 3rd!

The Thunder Blue team win streak ended at 12-games with a tough loss to a very strong New Kent Blast team.  The Thunder went undefeated in pool-play with 3 slaughter-rule wins.  On Saturday, in a battle of Thunders, Hanover beat Louisa 13-1.  In the second game of the day, the Thunder used some clutch hitting during the 1st extra-inning (international tie-breaker) to put away an excellent Vienna Star team 6-2.  Courtney D's base-clearing triple was key to the 6-2 win.  In the final game on Saturday, the Thunder scored 13 runs on 13 hits to squelch the Scorchers 13-3.
On Sunday, in the final game of pool-play, the Thunder unleashed another barrage of hits (13) scoring 12 runs to beat the Williamsburg Starz 12-2.  In the semi-finals, the New Kent blast broke open a 1-1 tie by scoring 3 in the 2nd and another 2 in the 3rd to take a 6-1 lead.  After another 3 innings, the Blast held on for the 7-2 win to advance to the Championship.
The Thunder coaches and parents were very proud of the effort put forth by the Thunder girls.  The improvements are very apparent and all the hard work is showing on the field.  All the hours of practice, the hundreds of ground balls and fly balls...all the batting practice...is building the foundation for future success.  Keep up the good work!

Quick Quips:

bulletThe Thunder batted a combined 0.345 for the tournament (41 for 119) which included 12 extra-base hits...
bulletLindsay W was 1-hit away from the "cycle" getting a single, double, and triple against Louisa...
bulletMadison C went the entire tournament without a strikeout (0.813 on-base percentage, wow!)...
bulletBaby W (Carter) braved the chilly weather to root on big sis' (well, mostly he just slept, but at least he was there!)...
bulletSaturday morning was frigid with many Thunder players and coaches sporting beanies and gloves...
bulletThe umpire for the first game on Saturday was a federal police agent, needless to say there was very little issue with how he called the game (and nobody got arrested)...
bulletCourtney D made perhaps the defensive play of the year as she sprung from behind the plate and "laid- out" to catch a pop foul in front of the first-base dugout -- the ball popped out of the catcher's mit as she hit the ground and she snared it with her bare hand for the out!...
