Unleash
the THUNDER!
In the OutRAGEous End of Summer Blowout
(USSSA) tournament in Tappahannock,
Thunder Blue prevailed to take home 1st
place. On Saturday, the Thunder
played 3 pool-play games. In the
first game, the Thunder squeaked out a 3
to 1 win over the Northern Neck
Rage. In the second game, the
Thunder exploded for 11 runs in the
first 2-innings to light-up the
Scorchers (final score 11-1). In
the final game of pool-play on Saturday,
the Thunder was silent as they were held
to just 2 hits in a 5-0 shut-out to the
VA Lady Titans.
It was up early again
on Sunday for an 8:00 a.m. match-up with
the Rage in the semi-finals of the
tournament. In an exciting
game...the Thunder scored 2 in the
bottom of the last inning to get the 8-6
win. The Titans battled a
resilient Scorcher team in the other
semi-final to set up a re-match in the
Championship game - Remember the Titans
(sorry had to get that in at least
once). In the final game, both
teams battled hard. After
5-innings, the Thunder led 3-0 and held
on for the ultimate 5-3 victory.
Overall, it was
another successful outing for Thunder
Blue. The team continues to jell
and improvements can be seen each
tournament. The support of the
parents, family, and friends is a key
part of the success of this team as it
works towards achieving many more
tournament wins heading into a rewarding
Fall 2006 and 2007 campaign...

Game
Summaries and Tournament Stats
Quick
Quips:
 | Chants of "We
Are PROUD of YOU!"
resonated in the dugout and the
loudest cheers of the weekend came
as a result of the inspirational
return of Megan
D to the Thunder line-up
in the 2nd game of pool play on
Saturday against the Scorchers... |
 | After pool play, many of the
Thunder went to the Caler
(Sr.) river house for a
cookout and fellowship -- Kenny
W once again was the
"King of the Grill" as he
cheffed up some burgers, chicken,
and hot dogs while others watched
some college football, fished
(several nice sized catfish were
caught), or swam... |
 | Along with her typical (excellent)
scorebook/stats role, Jen
C also provided some
needed off the field coaching
(discussion / motivation) to the
team... |
 | Thanks to Sarah
B (and family) for
joining the Thunder for the weekend
-- Sarah didn't disappoint as she
was solid at the plate to go along
with 2 outstanding pitching
performances... |
 | When not playing themselves, many Thunder
Red coaches, family, and players
were giving much appreciated support
to their sister Blue team... |
 | Notecards were placed
strategically within eye-shot in the
dugout to remind players of some
Thunder fundamentals (1) Run on/off
field (2) No "backward-Ks"
-- taking 3rd strike (3) No hustle
mistakes -- letting grounders go by
or flyballs drop and (4) No mental
mistakes -- know the situation,
where the play is, how many outs, no
missed signals... |

Individual
Highlights:
 | Courtney D battled the heat
to catch all 7 innings of the
Championship game -- her drag bunt
was "indefensible" and her
speed led to a team-high 5
runs-scored in the tournament... |
 | Lynnse C showed her batting
prowess laying down several good
bunts (including a key sacrifice in
the Championship game) to go along
with her usual stellar defense at
2nd base... |
 | Lindsey N earned a pitching
win in the 7-inning Championship
game and clobbered a game winning
double in the semi-final game... |
 | Taylor D had a 0.636
on-base percentage for the tourney
(3 for 7 with 4 BB) including a
key-hit in her 2 for 2 batting in
the Championship game... |
 | Lacie M led the team in
batting going 6 for 10 with 4 RBI
(with 0 K's) and made some
unbelievable "web gems" at
shortstop... |
 | Shawna K played an
outstanding 3rd base, scored 3 runs
in the tournament and hit a monster
triple to get the Thunder momentum
started in the 2nd inning of the
finals... |
 | Lindsay W was an all-around
leader for the team, combining a 3
for 9 hitting performance with
several solid defensive plays at 1st
base... |
 | Madison C had 3 RBIs and 2
runs-scored -- including a clutch
2-out base-hit in the semi-finals to
help propel the Thunder to the
win... |
 | Brianna J made perhaps the
best defensive play of the weekend
when she backed-up 1st base and
gunned down a runner at the plate at
a key time in the final inning of
the semi-final game... |
 | Ashley B laid down several
awesome bunts and made 2 key fly
ball catches in centerfield in the
Championship game against the
Titans... |
 | Megan D again provided
inspiration and encouragement for
her teammates in making her playing
return with the Thunder... |
 | Sarah B gave up only 3 hits
in 8 innings of work on the mound to
earn 2 wins including the tournament
semi-finals (to along with 3 for 8
at the plate)... |
