2005 Recap

Hanover Thunder Blue Back on the Diamond

At Dumbarton in Richmond, Thunder Blue battled hard but managed only 1 win -- albeit an awesome comeback win against a very strong Diamond Cutter team -- in the 5 game tournament.  Thunder Blue had to battle Thunder Red in the 1st game of the tournament and were unable to get the bats going dropping the game 10-2.  In a close battle with rival Hanover Diamonds, Blue lossed in a close contest 3 to 1.
In the final game of pool play on Saturday, the "never give up" Thunder Blue team scored 5 runs with 2 outs in the final inning to beat a Diamond Cutter team (7 to 6) that won that last tournament the Thunder played in on Aug 19-20 (see link below for more details).  Thunder Blue gave up a couple of 6-run innings to the Blitz team during the first game on Sunday, but came back to again battle the Hanover Diamonds dropping a close game 5 to 4 in the final game of the tournament.
Having to face a couple of teams that will be moving up to 14U, Thunder Blue proved that they can be competitive with anybody including some of the elite teams in the area and state.  The Thunder bats showed some life and the defense continues to get better.

Nice crowd...

Coach Jim's mandatory HELMET RULE at practice...

Megan's Focus...
Taylor D:  "This mouth guard tastes nasty...I wonder if they have flavored ones..."
Shawna K:  "When's it gonna be my turn..."
Lindsey N:  "Didn't my dad say something to me about putting my hand on my hip like this?..."
Lynnse C:  "When I grow up, I'm gonna be this tall..."
Lindsay W:  "I think I'm wearing a skirt with a purple shirt tomorrow...Bri?"
Brianna J:  "Not sure for me, do you think I should wear gold or silver earrings?"

The beatings will continue until morale improves...

Let me guess, we're visitors again...anybody seen my lucky green rabbits foot?...

Intensity...

Coach:  "It's not whether you win or lose it's how you place the blame...or something like that..."

Are we having fun yet?...

Individual Highlights:

bulletCourtney D gained some more experience on the mound as her training and practice begin to pay dividends - in the final game Courtney went 2 for 3 and made an outstanding flyball catch in left field.
bulletLynnse C had a team high 5 runs scored in the tournament and hit a clutch double in the comeback win against the Diamond Cutters (2 RBI to tie the score).
bulletLindsey N batted 0.400 (6 for 15) in the tournament and had the game winning RBI against the Diamond Cutters (thanks to the "Lucky Ladybug" that landed on her bat).
bulletTaylor D allowed only 6 runs in 11 total innings pitched and continued to swing a hot bat.
bulletLacie M showed her all-around athletic ability playing an outstanding shortstop to go along with solid pitching and catching efforts during the tournament -- Lacie also led the team in hitting (6 for 14 with 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored).
bulletShawna K had 4 RBIs and continued to excel in the field -- both at 3rd base and center field.
bulletLindsay W was nearly flawless at 1st base making several individual putouts and making some key "stretching scoop" assists.
bulletMadison C "got in the groove" at the plate hitting the ball well all weekend -- she ended up with 3 hits, 2 RBI and a run scored.
bulletBrianna J had a key hit in the win over the Diamond Cutters and had quality at-bats (hard hit balls, good bunt attempts) each time up.
bulletAshley B showed huge improvement at the plate during the tournament -- she battled hard against several quality pitchers -- Ashley fouled off several pitches before earning a walk and eventually scoring the game tying run against the Diamond Cutters in the come-from-behind win.
bulletMegan D provided some key coaching assistance and light-hearted commentary throughout the games to keep team spirits high.
