2005 Recap

Hanover Thunder Girls 12U Gets Worm in SoftballNation Early Bird

At RFP Park in Glen Allen, Hanover Thunder – Blue finished undefeated (5-0) to win the SoftballNation Early Bird Tournament.  The Thunder girls, made up primarily of student-athletes from Oak Knoll and Stonewall Jackson Middle School, won 3 games on Saturday in pool play and then won 2 games on Sunday to bring home the 1st place hardware.
Hanover Thunder began their 12U season in much the same way they finished their inaugural season last year at 10U (20-1 in 2005, winning 3 of 4 tournaments entered).  The Thunder, managed by Mark Berry, combined solid pitching and consistent offense to win all 5 games they played in the tournament.
The most exciting game of the tournament occurred on a rainy and windy Saturday afternoon between a strong Vienna Star team and Hanover Thunder.  After 5 innings, the Thunder led 3-2.  The rains strengthened and the winds blew harder as the top of 6th began with Vienna at the bat.  The Star’s used a walk and 3 base hits to go up 6 to 3 going in the bottom of the last inning.  The resilient Thunder team did not give up.  Without surrendering an out, the Thunder combined a walk, 2 hits, a hit batter, and couple of passed balls to score the 4 runs needed for the win.  Final score:  Hanover Thunder 7 Vienna Stars 6.

Courtney Didlake went 8 for 14 and scored 8 runs to lead the Thunder bats.  Kelly Heinz, along with 2 strong pitching performances, also contributed 7 for 14 at the plate with 10 RBI’s.
In the Championship game against the Vienna Stars, the Thunder scored in all but one inning to build an 8-0 lead; which was how it ended after 5 innings.  Overall, the Thunder outscored their opponents 48-10 for the weekend.  Congratulations to the Thunder girls on representing Hanover County well in their first outing of the year!

bulletCamp Kenny was alive and well on Saturday as about 30 players, family, and friends joined under the RFP pavilion for some dogs, chips, and cookies.
bulletThanks to Kelly H and Shelby W for coming out with "Blue" for the weekend -- both were key contributors
bulletBuffalo Wild Wings was overtaken on Sunday for the post-tournament celebration

Individual Highlights:

bulletCourtney D led the team with a .571 batting average (8 for 14) with 8 runs scored -- she was the only person on the team with NO strikeouts the entire tournament
bulletMadison C was flawless at shortstop, making several nice defensive plays - she also had an on-base-percentage of .500 and scored 6 runs
bulletLindsey N batted .300 to go with 3 solid pitching efforts giving up only 5 hits and 4 runs while striking out 22 in 14 innings pitched
bulletKelly H was outstanding (as usual) -- along with getting 2 wins (including the Championship game) on the mound, she was 7 for 14 at the plate with an incredible 10 RBIs

bulletLindsay W played a stellar first base for the entire tournament -- she made several sound defensive plays over the weekend
bulletLynnse C batted .400 for the tournament with 4 RBI and 5 runs scored and got one of the key hits in the 4-run bottom of the 6th win on Saturday against the Stars
bulletShelby W had a .538 on-base-percentage - with her speed, when she reached 1st base you may as well put her on 3rd base because nobody was going to throw her out -- Shelby also contributed on the mound on Saturday during the rain/wind game against Vienna
bulletAshley B played solid in center all weekend and scored the winning run against the Stars on Saturday -- she reached base 5 times on 10 plate appearances
bulletBrianna J scored 3 times and crushed the ball to left in her final plate appearance of the tourney
