2005 Recap

Thunder is Queen of the Halloween Bash -- Sting Hornets in Championship Game to Win Tourney!

The Hanover Thunder 12U (Red) found itself in a very tough bracket on Saturday. Manager David Whitlock was unable to attend due to the death of his father the night before the tournament began. Understandably, Shelby was very distracted on Saturday and needed to be with her family on Sunday.

On Saturday, we won the first game by slaughter rule against the Smithfield Galaxy 14-2. Next was a heartbreaking loss to a very good Wakefield Hornets team 5-4. The last game of the day was a spectacular game against the Virginia Lady Eagles. The Virginia Lady Eagles, an "A" team, finished 9th in the country this past year. We lost a heartbreaker in the bottom of the 6th when a great hit dropped in and the Eagles won 4-3. Since we were 1-2 on Saturday, we were sure we were going to be seeded really low in the Black bracket. We found out at 10:00PM on Saturday that we were in fact a #3 seed due to the fact that we only allowed 11 runs on Saturday.

On Sunday, we began pool play against the Smithfield Galaxy winning by slaughter rule (16-1). Next we played the #2 seed Rampage team. We won that game 6-3 putting us into the championship game against the Wakefield Hornets. This was the sixth game that we called upon Kelly "Super K" Heinz to pitch in the tournament. Kelly pitched a great game and excellent defense, including four put outs at home plate allowed us to win the game 12-4 by slaughter rule. It should be noted that Rachael Gilmour and Heather Chastain were great at the plate hitting the ball consistently all weekend long. Rachel Houff playing right field, threw out a runner trying to score at home with a perfect strike to Taylor Deemer who blocked the plate and absorbed the collision while holding onto the ball. Rachel Houff also had the game ending hit allowing Taylor Deemer to score from second to end the game 12-4.

Overall, given the distractions, the girls performed admirably. They had dedicated the tournament to David, Shelby and the Whitlock family and were able to follow through to win the gold. The winners plaque was presented to David at the funeral home Sunday night.
