2005 Recap

Thunder Rumbles to 10U Victory!

The Hanover Thunder allowed only 2-runs in 5 games to win the 2005 Pony Softball Fall Classic 10U tournament in Hopewell over the September 24-25, 2005 weekend.  In pool play on Saturday, the Thunder scored 10 runs in each of 3 games against the Vixens, Chaos, and Express.  The Chaos scored the only run of the day against the Thunder.

On Sunday, the Thunder received a bye to automatically advance to the semi-finals against the Chaos – a team they beat on Saturday.  The Thunder bats exploded for 12 runs in 2 innings (7 in the 1st, 5 in the 2nd ) to win by “slaughter rule” after only 3 innings.  In the 6-inning Championship game, the Thunder faced the top-seeded Glen Allen Blitz.  The Blitz did not allow a run on Saturday.  Neither team scored in the 1st inning.  In the 2nd inning, 2 walks to start the inning lead to 2 runs after a couple of stolen bases, an error, and a passed ball.  The Thunder added another run on a walk and error in the 4th to go up 3 to 0.  The Blitz scored 1 in the bottom of the 4th to complete the scoring for the game that ended 3 to 1 in favor of Hanover.

Both teams (Blitz and Thunder) displayed great sportsmanship as the runner-up and first-place trophies were presented.  After some pictures were taken in the outfield, the Thunder packed up Camp Kenny and headed back to Hanover to celebrate!  Congratulations to all the girls for the hard work they put in to be able to successfully compete in the tournament!

Camp Kenny...

Quick Quips:

bulletThanks to Kelly H for her support during the week (pitching batting practice) and her support at the games during the tournament.
bulletCamp Kenny was alive and well on Saturday – on a hill above the fields, Camp K, complete with canopy, gas grill, and satellite TV (football and racin’!) was established early on Saturday.  After a big opening game win, the Thunder family congregated around the Cully “mobile” home, portable grill and Camp K canopy to enjoy some good food and fellowship.
bulletOn Sunday, the celebration moved from Hopewell, Virginia to Mexico.  Chips, cerveza and tacos were enjoyed by all (including the 5 foot tall First-place trophy)

Individual Highlights:

bulletBrianna J batted 0.333 for the tournament including a triple and a home run.  She scored all 3 times she batted against the Chaos on Saturday (where she lead off with the triple and homered in the 3rd inning).
bulletLindsey N struck out 12 of 17 batters she faced for a Saturday win against the Express.  For the tournament she batted 0.500 including 4 triples and a home run.
bulletAuguste R continued to dominate on the mound – she was unflappable in the Championship game on the rubber and also reached base all 3 times at bat including getting one of only 2 Thunder hits.
bulletTaylor D was solid on mound, behind the plate (throwing out several runners), and at the plate – she was 3 for 7 and had an on-base average of over 0.700.  Taylor also scored 7 runs and had 5 RBIs.
bulletCourtney D batted 0.375, batted in 5 runs and scored 7 for the tournament.  She also was outstanding in her first appearance of the season at pitcher.  She pitched 3 strong innings against the Vixens on Saturday (no runs, 7 strikeouts)
bulletMadison C was quite possibly the defensive player of the tournament, especially in the Championship game.  She showed great range in the field and didn’t let anything get by her at 1st base.
bulletShawna K played great defense, getting several put-outs to go along with solid hitting.  Shawna batted 0.375 with 7 runs scored and was the only Thunder batter to not strike-out for the entire tournament.
bulletLindsay W batted 0.300 with 3 RBIs for the tournament.  Lindsey reached base in 4 of the 5 games and played well in the field.
bulletMegan D was 2 for 2 in the semi-final game.  She batted 0.333 for the tournament and only struck-out 1 time.  She also displayed good base running skills.
bulletLynnse C played awesome defense for the Thunder.  She recorded 3 key put-outs in the Championship game to help seal the victory.
bulletAshley B played great fundamental defense for the tournament and hit the ball hard throughout the tournament.  She also scored a run in her only official at-bat in the first game and had 3 stolen bases.
