2005 Recap

The Thunder Rolls…

The Hanover Thunder looked impressive in their first 10U tournament of the Fall.  The Thunder were part of a 9-team tournament field for the NSA Labor Day Scramble at Dumbarton Elementary School complex.  Hanover joined teams from Chesapeake, Augusta County, and Williamsburg for the Labor Day tournament.  Hanover also got the opportunity to play another Hanover team in a game dubbed “Thunder and Lightning”.

The Thunder started Saturday with a solid 10-0 win over the Williamsburg Starz and followed that win with a hard fought 6-5 win over a strong Augusta Flames team.  Hanover closed-out pool play with a “slaughter-rule” win over the Chesapeake Cyclones 8-0.

On Sunday, the Thunder continued to pound the ball and play solid defense in a 15-0 thrashing of the other Hanover team, Lightning.  In the semi-final game, the Thunder once again rolled, beating the Chesapeake Cyclones 12 to 0 to set-up a re-match with the Augusta Flames.  In the late afternoon championship game, Augusta scored 4 early runs as the Thunder bats cooled off.  Despite a slow start, the Thunder was able to close the game with a flurry to lose by only 2, 8 to 6.

The Thunder enjoyed their first of many (hopefully) trophy ceremonies after the game.  Along with a runner-up plaque, each player received a “gold-glove” trophy for reaching the finals.  Overall the Thunder won 5 games, 4 of which were won by “slaughter-rule”, while only losing one.  In the six games played, the Thunder scored 57 runs while only allowing 13 (in 2 games with the Flames).  Congratulations on an outstanding weekend!

Quick Quips:

bulletThe team really appreciated the support of our other Hanover Thunder team (12U) – Kelly H, Shelby W, Meredith H along with several other team parents came out to support the team.  Let’s make sure we show them support as they open their tournament schedule next week at Tappahannock..
bulletOn Saturday, Kenny W, with his “grill to go”, cooked up some hot dogs while other brought chips and snacks after the Thunder won their first two games.

Individual Highlights:

bulletBrianna J scored 6 runs in the tournament along with a long ball on Saturday that hit off the base of the fence.  Unfortunately, Brianna’s blast on Sunday, which probably would have cleared the fence on field 1 (from Saturday), ended up being a double on field 2 (200 foot fence).
bulletCourtney D once again displayed the attitude and effort behind the plate that energizes the whole team.  She batted 0.375 for the tournament and also displayed key negotiating skills in acquiring the “cool” coin used for the pre-game flips from the umpire in the Championship game.
bulletMadison C played a solid first base and scored 6 runs in the tournament.  Madison made one of several excellent plays in the field when she “got some air” to catch a high throw and was able to come down on first base to get the out.
bulletTaylor D had an “MVP” type tournament combining 2 outstanding pitching efforts (9 innings pitched, only 3 hits, no runs, 15 strikeouts and only 4 walks) with solid hitting.  At the plate, Taylor was 6 for 12, scored 8 runs, and was the only Thunder player without a strikeout.
bulletLindsey N pitched a no-hit shutout to start the day on Saturday and got at least one hit in each game of the tournament.  She batted 0.571 (8 for 14) with 5 extra-base hits (3 doubles and 2 triples) and scored a team-high 9 runs.
bulletAuguste R had an outstanding tournament.  Along with a solid effort at the plate, 4 for 11 with a team-high 8 RBIs, she was a workhorse on the mound.  In 3 games she pitched 15 innings striking out 21 batters while only allowing 2 walks.
bulletMegan D had 3 RBIs and scored 3 runs in the tournament.  She scored every time she got on base and played well in the field.
bulletShawna K scored 6 runs and was excellent in the field.  She made the “catch of the day” when she ran to catch a ball hit over 3rd base, the ball hit the glove, her butt hit the ground, the ball bounced on her stomach, and she had the instinct to grab the ball out of the air for the out.
bulletLindsay W had 5 RBIs including a double in the tournament.  Unfortunately she was plucked by a wild pitch in the final game, but showed the toughness and courage to come back in the game after the injury.
bulletLynnse C scored 5 runs and had 5 RBIs to go along with solid play at 2nd base.  She also showed great instinct and aggressiveness on the bases.  She wasn’t afraid to get a little dirty as she dove back safely head first on a close play at third in the semi-final game.
bulletAshley B was part of a momentum breaking play on Sunday where, from the outfield, she perfectly hit her cut-off person (Lynnse C) who made bullet throw to Courtney Didlake for the out at the plate.  She also had 2 picture-perfect bunts, one for a base-hit and one to move a runner, in the hard-fought win over the Flames on Saturday.
