Thunder Blue extends Win Streak to 16, Capture 3rd Straight Title!

Propelled by an awesome hitting performance, the Thunder Blue travelled to Poor Farm Park (Ashland) for the USSSA Fall Challenge tournament (Nov 1-2) and returned with the 1st place hardware!  In the 12-team tournament, the Thunder went 3-0 in pool-play on Saturday to earn a 2:00 p.m. start time and a spot in the quarterfinals for play on Sunday.  Impressive wins over the Chantilly Lace (11 to 2) and Glen Allen Blitz (11 to 3) set-up a Championship game against one of the best teams in the state — the Virginia Classics.  In the 5-games leading to the final game the Thunder outscored their opponents 55-5 and scored an incredible 38 runs (~7.5 per game) in the 1st inning!

In the Championship, the Virginia Classics struck first with a 2-run home-run in the top of the 1st — the Thunder answered with 2 in the 3rd and then went up 5-2 with 3 more in the 4th (thanks to a crushing 2-run home run by Shawna K and a clutch 2-out RBI single to right by Julie P)...after an attempt to put the game away with a Thunderous 2-run home-run by lead-off hitter Taylor S in the bottom of the 6th to take a 7-2 lead, the “never-say-die” Classics mounted a tremendous rally in the top of the final frame to knot the game at 7.  In the home half of the 7th, Lindsey N led-off with a single to centerfield which brought up clean-up hitter Shannon A.  After going down 0-2 in the count, Shannon blasted the next pitch over the outfielders heads (well over 200’) that didn’t stop until it got to the 300 foot fence — the joyous Thunder dugout emptied to greet her at the plate after her game winning Home Run!   Although Shannon delivered the final blow, the win was a complete team effort — the Thunder made several outstanding defensive plays, had only 1 strikeout, had 12 hits (by 8 different batters), and had 7 different players score...
